Think of this Chocolate Hummus like a high protein chocolate mousse. Does it taste like chickpeas? Not really. We pack enough cocoa in there that qualifies as a more chocolate than true hummus! Is this a snack or a dessert? Honestly, it could be both! Eat it with cut fruit as a lightly sweet treat after lunch, spread it on a bagel or toast for breakfast, or serve with whipped cream. This is a great dairy free chocolate spread of you are lactose sensitive or intolerant.
This recipe is really just as easy as a regular homemade hummus recipe, with just a few additional ingredients. There are certainly more hummus recipes to come on Craft & Process, as homemade hummus is one of our staples. We tend to make plain hummus, but this chocolate version is a special treat.
We originally found chocolate hummus as a product in the grocery store shelves, and at first we were skeptical. After trying it and discovering it was so yummy, we wanted to attempt to recreate it. It is still hummus, it has protein in it from the chickpeas, so it is a more fulfilling snack than a chocolate dip. Bonus, making chocolate hummus at home allows you to control how much sugar is added!
You can adjust the sweetness to your liking using sugar or your preferred sweetening agent, or mix and match like we did with a combination of honey and dates. Honey, syrup, puréed dates, white sugar, or brown sugar would all work in this recipe, with each adding unique flavors.
Another serving idea leaning more into the dessert category is to layer the chocolate hummus with freshly whipped cream and top with chocolate shavings and cocoa nibs. You will have a lighter, higher-protein chocolate mousse parfait than a mousse made with butter and cream.
Seriously, try this hummus the next time you have a chocolate craving. It will certainly fulfill with slightly less guilt!
